Where to play, who to follow, and what to read and watch. Everything here is recommended because it is good, not because of an arrangement — there are no affiliate links on this page and there is not going to be.
Public golf in Los Angeles
LA County runs the largest publicly owned golf system in the country: twenty courses across eighteen facilities. The ceiling here is unusually high for public golf, and none of it requires a membership. These are the ones that come up most.
Play twilight. The LA County courses and DeBell run a real two-tier system — standard twilight, then a deeper super-twilight — and the second tier is roughly half the full rate. In winter, standard twilight at the county courses starts as early as 12:30pm, which is most of a round in daylight for about the price of nine holes.

LA City courses
Eight 18-hole courses and a set of nine-holers, all on one fee schedule, all cheaper than the county courses. Every one carries twilight and super-twilight.

Get the Player Card. It books tee times 9 days out instead of 7, and it unlocks early twilight rates — which on a $41 Wilson weekday means paying $27, or $19 if you can push to super-twilight. If you play twilight with any regularity it pays for itself quickly.
Weekend rounds before 9am carry a premium (the higher weekend figure above). Carts are $18 for 18, $13 at twilight, $11 super-twilight; push carts $8. Range balls $8–$20, and Griffith Park has Top Tracer for a couple of dollars more. Twilight start times shift through the year — check before you drive.

Outside the city and county schedules above, and worth the drive: Rustic Canyon (Moorpark — the architecture nerd's pick, and the best golf on this whole page), Santa Anita (Arcadia, under the San Gabriels), Rio Hondo (Downey), Alhambra, and Industry Hills (City of Industry — two serious courses, and the hardest walk in Southern California). Rates vary; check before you go.

- Gameday Grails
- Ernest Wilkins' vintage sportswear archive and shop. Editorial-first, built around the piece-plus-history-plus-why-it-matters format, and the clearest model for treating old sportswear as a record rather than merchandise. If you only follow one thing on this list, this one.
- Generation Mulligan
- UK vintage golf, weekly Friday restocks, a tight price ladder and a public sell-to-us sourcing loop. The closest analog to what Free Drop does, doing it well and doing it first.
- Eastside Golf
- Built the Swingman into a genuine cultural mark and made a real argument about who golf belongs to.
- Underrated Golf
- Stephen Curry's junior platform, launched 2022, built around access and opportunity for players who would not otherwise get a pipeline.
- Bogey Boys
- Macklemore's label. Seasonal capsule framing and unusually polished operations for a brand this young.
Shops
Golf shops worth knowing, most of them nowhere near a pro shop. Free Drop has no arrangement with any of them.
- Metalwood Studio Los Angeles
- Design-led cut-and-sew working the same archive references Free Drop sources from, made new. The clearest argument that golf clothing can be authored rather than licensed.
- Malbon Golf Los Angeles
- LA-founded, and the ceiling for how far golf apparel goes into culture and collaboration. Useful as a reference point rather than a template.
- The Divot Tokyo
- Japan reads golf clothing differently — closer to collecting than to sport — and Tokyo has been ahead on vintage golf for years.
- Manors United Kingdom
- British, understated, and the strongest editorial voice in modern golf apparel. Worth studying for how they write, not only what they sell.
- Win The Day Golf New Zealand
- Vintage resale, tournament and course memorabilia, low-ticket accessories, and a physical coffee-and-vintage store. The most complete version of the model Free Drop is running.
Community
The reason any of this works in Los Angeles. Public golf here is social infrastructure, and these are the groups making it that way.

- City-wide club culture built around public golf rather than membership.
- Swang Rancho Park
- Free Range nights at Rancho — the clearest example of a muni turning into a scene after dark.
- Roosevelt Wine Club Roosevelt
- Nine holes in Griffith with a bottle. Exactly the register of golf Free Drop is dressed for.
- Griffith Park Golf Club Wilson / Harding
- The long-running club at the two Griffith 18s, and the keeper of a lot of the city's golf memory.
- First Tee
- Junior golf programming and the access pipeline. The part of the game that decides who gets to be in it in twenty years.
Screen
Golf on film does one of three things: satirises privilege, dramatises aspiration, or uses the game as a morality machine. These are the ones that matter to how the clothes read.
- Caddyshack (1980)
- The ur-text. Defined golf as class comedy for mass culture, and it sorts its world entirely by costume — patrician club dress, working caddies in functional gear, and the loud intruder. It made golf's social structure legible without requiring you to know the sport.
- Tin Cup (1996)
- The anti-country-club romance. Roy McAvoy is the range rat and the West Texas muni philosopher, and the film turns the driving range into a moral landscape. It plays better now than it did then.
- Happy Gilmore (1996)
- Golf made legible by invasion. The patron saint of not dressing the way you are supposed to.
- Curb Your Enthusiasm
- Larry David did more than anyone to treat the club as a compressed society — rules, resentments, invisible class markers, and slow play as farce.
Reading
- Bury Me With the Lo On
- On the Lo Lifes and how Brooklyn and the Bronx turned Polo Ralph Lauren into a hip-hop object in the late eighties and early nineties. The background to why vintage Polo Golf is not only country-club clothing — prep signifiers were detached from their class context and re-coded from the street outward, and that is the pipeline Free Drop sources inside.
